Gnomesflake

This blanket depicts an array of gnomes amongst pretty snowflakes. The gnomes are almost making a snowflake shape themselves, hence the title “Gnomesflake”.

Interlocking & Mosaic

As with all my designs, choose your preferred colorwork technique: interlocking crochet or overlay mosaic crochet.

“Gnomesflake” was originally published in January 2021 with an interlocking crochet option and a mosaic option using the interlocking crochet chart. An adjusted mosaic crochet option was added in October 2022. Read more about these techniques and terms at https://ashleeslint.com/tutorials/interlocking-and-mosaic-crochet/.

All three options come with the fully written pattern and charts. The mosaic charts have X’s for the dropped double crochets.

Bottom-Up

I’ve been asked a few times if this design is worked from the center-out. If you’re really skilled at reading charts you could attempt that, but it is written to be worked from the bottom-up, not the center-out.

The gnomes at the top are the same as the gnomes on the bottom, so when it’s finished you won’t necessarily be able to tell which way is up.

Size

The throw blanket will finish to 60″ / 152cm square if you meet gauge. See more blankets at https://ashleeslint.com/blanket-patterns.

Gnomes

A few weeks ago I noticed there were a lot of gnomes showing up in the crochet groups I am in on Facebook. I started drawing up this pattern with snowflakes and sideways gnomes but the angles weren’t working and then I got distracted with all those Holiday Squares.

And then the holidays were over.

It is the new year! Welcome to 2021!

Wait…

Are gnomes still good without more holidays looming?

The pattern was so close to finished. I could finish it now or leave it for a few months and publish it in time for next winter.

But if I wait until next winter maybe gnomes won’t be popular anymore?

Ask for Help

I decided to ask my Facebook group what they thought.

Right away the responses started rolling in: it was a resounding, “YES! Finish the pattern! We love gnomes!”

So, today, I present to you, my finished gnome-snowflake pattern: Gnomesflake.

The file, like all my patterns, has written instructions for interlocking crochet, a one-page chart (good for zooming in on screens), and the written instructions for overlay mosaic (as well as instructions on the envelope border). (This pattern, “Gnomesflake“, has been updated so instead of a single file with both the interlocking crochet and overlay mosaic crochet pattern you will get THREE files. Read more at https://ashleeslint.com/2022/10/03/gnomesflake-update/ or jump down to the yardage details.)

I have received quite a few happy notes already and I am so glad you like this cute pattern! I must now return to my crochet hook.

Available on Ravelry & EtsyAnd you will get an automatic 30% off (no code needed) until Jan 7, 2021! Offer expired.

Important Details

“Gnomesflake” comes with three files: one for interlocking crochet, one for the overlay mosaic crochet option using the original interlocking crochet chart, and one for an adjusted, solid overlay mosaic crochet option.

Interlocking Crochet

Interlocking crochet is a colorwork technique where you create two layers of mesh locked together. You work one row at a time, alternating between the two contrasting colors.

Interlocking crochet / LFM crochet file includes:

  • line-by-line written pattern
  • a one-page chart
  • a multi-page chart

Details

  • Chart is 241 x 241
  • Gauge: 16 stitches x 8 rows = 4”
  • 60″ x 60″ / 152cm x 152cm
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (4100 – 4300 yards total)
    • Main color (MC) (the gnomes) – 2050 yards plus 200 for optional border
    • Accent color (AC) (background) – 2050 yards

Original Overlay Mosaic Crochet

There are two overlay mosaic crochet files included with “Gnomesflake“.

Originally (in January 2021) I used the same chart for both the interlocking crochet option and the overlay mosaic crochet option. With this colorwork option you can see the interlocking mesh dots even when you use the overlay mosaic crochet technqiue.

Read more about these techniques at https://ashleeslint.com/tutorials/interlocking-and-mosaic-crochet/.

For this original overlay mosaic crochet option you’ll receive both a single-page chart and a multi-page chart along with the fully written pattern. My mosaic crochet charts have x’s marked on them for the dropped double crochets.

Mosaic Crochet file includes:

  • line-by-line written pattern
  • instructions for optional envelope border
  • instructions on reading a chart
  • a one-page chart marked with X’s (good for viewing on a screen)
  • a multi-page chart marked with X’s (better for printing)

Details

  • Chart is 241 x 241
  • Gauge: 16 sc blo stitches x 16 rows = 4”
  • 60″ x 60″ / 152cm x 152cm
  • 5 mm hook (H-8)
  • Worsted weight yarn (4450 – 5250 yards total)
    • Main color (gnomes) – 2000 yards
    • Contrasting color (background) – 2450 yards
    • Optional envelope border – 800 yards

Adjusted Overlay Mosaic Crochet

In October 2022 I added a third file: the adjusted overlay mosaic crochet option.

The overlay mosaic crochet technique does not require the interlocking mesh dots so in this option I have removed them.

You’ll still receive multiple x-marked charts along with a fully written pattern.

Adjusted Mosaic Crochet file includes:

  • line-by-line written pattern
  • instructions for optional envelope border
  • instructions on reading a chart
  • a one-page chart marked with X’s (good for viewing on a screen)
  • a multi-page chart marked with X’s (better for printing)

Details

  • Chart is 237 x 237
  • Gauge: 14 sc blo stitches x 15 rows = 4”
  • 64″ x 68″ / 162cm x 173cm
  • 5 mm hook (H-8)
  • Worsted weight yarn (5100 – 5900 yards)
    • Main color (gnomes) – 2100 yards
    • Contrasting color (background) – 3000 yards
    • Optional envelope border – 800 yards
