SWAK Blanket
SWAK stands for “Sealed With A Kiss”. *Muah* (that’s a kiss noise). The SWAK Blanket uses four large squares: Heart Lips 40, Tiled Hearts 40, and two Tiled Mirror 40 squares.
Interlocking & Mosaic
As with all my designs, you can choose to use the interlocking crochet technique or the overlay mosaic crochet technique.
However, for this design, I truly had the interlocking crochet method in mind because the wrong side will show the opposite designs (read more).
Size
The “40” at the end of each square’s title refers to how many windows are in the foundation row of the interlocking crochet pattern.
Both techniques are on a 81 x 81 chart and will finish to about 20″ square.

I am not a fan of made up holidays… or deadlines. I fully intended on publishing this bundle of patterns by January 14 so that you would have a month before February 14 to get it done. It is already January 19, so I am behind schedule. Sorry, my bad.
The silly thing is that these patterns have been in my drafts list for a few months already! I just let too many other fun and exciting things get in the way of finishing the written instructions.
Plus, I don’t always have a crocheted picture to go with my patterns, and if I hadn’t insisted on crocheting this first then it definitely would have been published “on time”.
My little SWAK (Sealed With A Kiss) Blanket is only two panels by two panels. Each panel is a “40-window” square which works out to about 20″ when done with Worsted Weight yarn. You might want yours to be bigger if you use a lighter yarn or plan on doing some snuggling under it. Just make more panels!

Heart Lips 40
This square features bold lips on a background of hearts. The heart pattern behind the lips is the same heart pattern as in “Tiled Hearts 40“.
I also used this lip design in one of my Doctor Who panels: Hello Sweetie.
Tiled Hearts 40
This heart design is different than my many hearts but uses the same sized heart twisted in different directions.
This is the background to the Heart Lips 40 square.
The wrong side almost looks like Tiled Mirror 40.
Tiled Mirror 40
This design is almost what the wrong side of Tiled Hearts 40 looks like. I used two of these squares in my SWAK Blanket.
40? Why do all the titles say 40?
If you’re familiar with my designs you may already recognize that I have quite a few squares with “40” in the title.
This is a size reference. See more large squares.
These large squares begin with 40 windows in the foundation row when you use the interlocking crochet technique.
When I first started designing I only created interlocking crochet patterns. It was a few months before I added the overlay mosaic crochet technique to my patterns and rather than renaming the old patterns I kept the “40” because it still works as a size reference for the mosaic crochet patterns too.
When the chart is 81 x 81 it is 40 windows wide for interlocking crochet; with mosaic crochet a chart of 81 x 81 will be 83 stitches wide (we add one stitch to each side for the joining and ending stitches).
Both techniques end up being about 20″.
Wrong Side
I crocheted my blanket using the interlocking crochet technique. I am much quicker using this technique compared to overlay mosaic crochet.
And, for this bundle of patterns, I really think the interlocking technique brings something extra: reversible fabric!
SWAK Blanket Inspiration
I drew these lips when I was creating my “Hello Sweetie” banner for my Doctor Who series.
I was playing around with that file one night and decided it would be ok to use the lips for a valentine’s day project. I needed some hearts in the background but I didn’t want to use my “Many Hearts” pattern again.
So, I spun some hearts around and came up with the Tiled Hearts 40 square.
I kept that background design as its own square and plopped my lips on another square and now had 2 new square designs.
Wrong Side of Interlocking Crochet Pattern
But while I was crocheting Heart Lips 40 I noticed that the back/ wrong side was creating a pretty neat design!
At first, I thought I would just make three Tiled Hearts 40 squares and then flip some over to have some showing the wrong side on the front of the blanket.
But there’s this nice straight line on the front of all my squares where the two interlocking crochet layers get locked together and I don’t like the way the back looks different with the dashed lines.
So, I went back to my computer and drew up a pattern for it!
But I didn’t make it an exact replica.
You’ll see that the front of my SWAK Blanket has white centers where the back side has red centers.
Ta Da!
And thus, this trio of squares was created!
Overlay Mosaic Crochet Wrong Side
And, if you are using the mosaic crochet technique, the back of your squares will just be striped.
In Conclusion
I can’t wait to see all the creative ways you will use these patterns! Some of my instagram followers have suggested pillows and wall hangings.
