Interlocking & Mosaic
Monstera Leaf is a small throw blanket that can be made using either interlocking crochet or overlay mosaic crochet. Both colorwork techniques use two colors of yarn with high contrast but only one color is used per row!
Mosaic Options
This design was originally published in May 2021 with an interlocking crochet option and an overlay mosaic crochet option using the same chart.
As of November 2023, Monstera Leaf has been updated to include an adjusted, overlay mosaic crochet option. This option uses a chart that has been adjusted from the original so that the solid areas are actually solid.

Monstera Leaves are Popular
Have you noticed these giant leaves are very popular right now? I love how they give a space a happy, carefree, tropical vibe.
To become the iconic leaf, the plants must fenestrate (this is when the leaves split and get holes). The plants do this themselves – do NOT cut your Monstera leaves! (I saw someone asking about this in a plant-help group; her poor plant).
I do not have a green enough thumb to grow one of these tropical plants in dry, dusty Saskatchewan, Canada. I have 3 plants on my window sill and I’m amazed they are still alive.
Size of Monstera Leaf Blanket
I drew this chart smaller than some of my previous blanket patterns. I like having lots of different sizes for you to choose from. Sometimes we want intricate patterns that are huge and sometimes we want a smaller project.
I personally like to have multiple WIPs (works in progress) of varying sizes and difficulties so that I can work on whatever I want in the moment. Something big, something small, something easy, something hard, etc.
If you match my gauge, your finished “Monstera Leaf” blanket will be 46″ x 60″ / 117cm x 152cm.
Color Choice
I think black or dark green would be the best choice for the Main Color and either a light green or possibly an off-white as the Accent Color / Contrasting Color. But, of course, you are free to choose any color you want!
I used dark green for the Main Color (MC) in my interlocking crochet sample.
Altona Newcombe used green for the Main Color (MC) in her overlay mosaic crochet sample (using the original chart with the mesh dots visible).

Original Overlay Mosaic Crochet

- Main color (leaves) – 1785 yards plus 300 yards for
