One Octopus
This extra large square features a realistic drawing of an octopus! Use it as a baby blanket or join it with other ocean-themed squares for a larger blanket.

Size
Each of these squares is categorized as a baby blanket on its own. With the interlocking crochet technique they begin with 60 windows in the foundation row. The mosaic crochet option is 121 stitches wide.

Yesterday I published a new eBook: More in the Ocean. This pattern, One Octopus, is probably my favorite one of the bunch!
I drew this while I was working on my previous eBook, Baby Ocean & Others. But this octopus doesn’t have the right cartoon quality to be considered a “baby” design, in my opinion.
After I double-checked that my octopus had eight legs I asked my 4-year-old son what he thought of my picture. He is our resident creature expert, especially ocean creatures, so I thought he would like my octopus drawing. He looked at it, seemed impressed, stated it’s a “colossal squid”, and walked away! So, I guess you can interpret it as a squid if you like.
I love this red and cream mosaic sample of One Octopus by Angela Kermack because it looks like what I was imagining in my head!

My testers did a great job: Angela Kermack did the mosaic sample (shown above) and Nessa Miller did the interlocking one.
For the interlocking crochet blanket, Nessa used light blue as the Main Color for her piece.
You can see on the wrong side that the bubbles become plus signs and the colors are mostly inverted.

Important Pattern Details for “One Octopus”
Like all my designs, you’ll receive one file for the interlocking crochet technique and one file for the overlay mosaic crochet technique for this pattern.

Interlocking Crochet
Interlocking crochet is a colorwork technique where you create two layers of mesh locked together. You work one row at a time, alternating between the two contrasting colors.
Interlocking crochet / LFM crochet file includes:
- line-by-line written pattern
- instructions on reading a chart (to be added with next update)
- a one-page chart

- Chart is 121 x 121
- Gauge: 16 DC x 8 rows = 4”
- 30″ x 30″ / 76cm
- 4.5 mm hook (US7)
- Worsted weight yarn (1050 – 1075 yards total)
- Main color (MC) (octopus) – 525 yards plus 25 for optional border
- Accent color (AC) (background) – 525 yards
Original Overlay Mosaic Crochet
One Octopus was originally published in October 2021. I used the same chart for both the interlocking crochet option and the overlay mosaic crochet option. With this colorwork option you can see the interlocking mesh dots even when you use the overlay mosaic crochet technqiue.
