Book Dragon

Interlocking & Mosaic

This design includes the full pattern and charts for both techniques.

The mosaic version is solid.

Size

The chart for the interlocking crochet version of this pattern is 235 x 293.

The mosaic option has had the uneccesary border lines and mesh dots removed, so the chart is 231 x 289.

If you meet gauge, your interlocking crochet blanket will be 59” x 73” / 149cm x 186cm.

The mosaic option will be 62” x 83” / 156cm x 210cm.

Of course, as always, you can choose to use a different yarn weight and an appropriate hook and you’ll get a smaller or larger finished product!

Mythical Dragon

This whimsical dragon may not be reading the book he’s perched on. It is full of imaginary ancient runes. The art on the sides is reminiscent of an ancient language but doesn’t actually say anything (as far as I know).

I love reading fantasy novels. I read about 2 hours a day (not just fantasy, but definitely one of my favorite genres). I am not as much a fan of television and movies. My kids like the tv series, “How to Train Your Dragon” though.

I was reading the Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks (again) when I started drawing this design. I spent way too long agonizing over the details and I am happy to finally get this one out into the world!

TWO OPTIONS

As with all of my patterns, you have the option of using the interlocking crochet technique or the overlay mosaic crochet technique. Each technique has its own file. And each file has written line-by-line instructions and a chart. The mosaic chart has X’s showing where to do your dropped double crochets.

TESTERS

As always, I am so grateful for my testers. My team for this pattern included Angela, Eva, Heather Passmore, and Maja Serec.

Interlocking Crochet’s Right & Wrong Sides

The right side and wrong side of the interlocking crochet version will look like these samples (pictured below) by Heather Passmore and Maja Serec.

Right side of Heather Passmore’s interlocking crochet sample of “Book Dragon”. She used dark grey as the Accent Color (AC) and a striping yarn as the Main Color (MC).

Wrong side of Heather Passmore’s sample.

Right side of Maja Serec’s interlocking crochet sample. You can’t tell in this photo, but she used thread and a 1.75mm hook!

Wrong side of Maja Serec’s sample. Black was used as the Main Color (MC).

On the “right side” of the blanket, the dragon faces to the right.

The “wrong side” of the interlocking crochet version shows the dragon facing left but his lines are fuzzy. And the background dashes turn into lines.

Wrong Side of Mosaic Crochet

When you use the overlay mosaic crochet technique you will cut your yarn at the end of each row and are always working from the “right side” / front.

The wrong side of your mosaic crochet blanket will be stripes. You may see a faint illusion of the design.

Main Color First

My patterns always instruct you to look at the chart to be sure you’re using the colors the way you intend to. I get a lot of messages from people who aren’t sure which color to use first (and I don’t mind these messages) but I always try to help now and educate for later.

The first color used is the MC (Main Color) and I suggest black or darker than the other color.

Blanket Size

The blanket fits nicely on a bed if you match gauge (using worsted weight yarn / 4 – medium) like these samples from Angela Kermack and Eva.

Angela Kermack’s overlay mosaic sample, green as the Main Color (MC).

Eva’s overlay mosaic sample, blue as the Main Color (MC).

Size Options

You can use any weight yarn and an appropriately sized hook and you will still get the image to show up – but your finished product will be smaller.

Maja used thread and a 1.75 mm hook for hers!
