Persistent Blossoms
Originally Published in Crochet Now! Issue 93
I designed this crochet blanket using center-out overlay mosaic crochet squares for the Spring 2023 issue of Crochet Now! magazine (issue 93). The same chart is used for both the small and large squares in an effort to make it more magazine-friendly.
Crochet Now is a UK publication and the magazine version of Persistent Blossoms is written in UK terms.
Now that the rights have reverted back to me I can self-publish. My PDFs use US terminology and you now have the interlocking crochet option as well!

Persistent Is Hard to Spell
When I submitted my proposal to the magazine I used the wrong spelling (“persistant”) and those kinds of mistakes feel a bit mortifying to me! I am so glad they ignored that bit and focused on the crochet part of it instead!
Winter Blossoms
When I designed this blanket I was thinking of our Canadian winters where things are mostly covered with white snow and frost. Our green grass turns brown and then gets covered with snow. Some of out trees lose their leaves and get covered with frost (yay for evergreens!).
When spring finally arrives we are so excited to see tiny flowers start popping up even when there’s still snow on the ground! Not all flowers do that, of course. But it amazes me that there ARE flowers that push their colorful petals out in amongst the snow!
Those blossoms are persistent!
Personal Application
I’d like to think I can also be a persistent blossom. Blooming regardless of the snow. Making beautiful colors where there was only cold snow. I hope I can bring joy to my family and friends (that includes you!) with my presence and my creative gifts!

Interlocking & Mosaic Crochet
This design was originally just mosaic crochet for the magazine. But, months ago, I asked everyone to chime in on whether I should add the interlocking crochet option when it came time to self-publish and the results are below.
Persistent Blossoms in Two Techniques
I was really happy to see that the majority of responses like having both crochet techniques available. I like having both and I want to continue offering that!
Yarn
The magazine chose Caron Simply Soft for this blanket. (I was so excited to get yarn in the mail!) I used 4 skeins in White 9701 (MC), and 1 skein each in Strawberry 0015 (CC1), Gold 9782 (CC2), Cobalt Blue 9784 (CC3), Lavender Blue 9756 (CC4) for my mosaic crochet blanket.
This is a worsted weight yarn; size 4 – medium according to the Craft Yarn Council Standards. It is 100% acrylic. Each skein has 315 yards / 288 meters per 6 ounces / 170.1 grams.
You can use any yarn you want to get the design to show up. Just make sure all your colors are the same weight and your hook size is appropriate for your yarn. It will, of course, change the finished size of your square and your yardage amounts will be different.
Persistent Blossom Squares
The blanket, as designed, uses 25 large squares and 64 small squares to make the blanket. You don’t have to use an array of colors but you will need at least one main color and one contrasting color.
In fact, you don’t have to use these squares to make the blanket as designed either!
Change the border if you hate the tiny squares.
Use the large squares for a bag or a pillow instead.
I love seeing creativity!
Persistent Blossoms was tested by Marijke Laenen (shown above) as well as CrochetCarob, Eva, Maja Serec, Margaret Maillet, and Wolsalon.
Colors
The MC (Main Color) is white for ALL the Persistent Blossom squares and for joining all the Persistent Blossom squares.
All the odd-numbered rounds use the MC whereas all the even-numbered rounds use a CC (Contrasting Color – mosaic option) / AC (Accent Color – interlocking option). Each square uses only one color to go with the white.
To limit the number of ends to weave in, join as many squares as possible in one straight line.

It was deep winter when I finished this blanket and sent it to the UK for the magazine!
I thought my husband’s motorcycle looked a bit cold that day.
That’s a LOT of squares!
The wrong side is pretty too!
