September Dog

September Dog is the ninth large square pattern in the 2024: A Year of Dogs series. This month’s square is a puppy leaning on a giant bone and my 7-year-old son has declared it is his favorite!

Crochet Colorwork

Like all the dog squares in this series, September Dog can be done using your choice of colorwork technique: interlocking crochet or overlay mosaic crochet.

You’ll receive the fully written pattern and charts for both techniques. The mosaic crochet option uses an adjusted chart that is solid in the solid areas (so you don’t see any of the interlocking mesh dots when you use the mosaic technique).

New webshop!

I’ve just finished building my self-hosted webshop! I have been wanting to create my own website to sell my patterns for years but it’s never felt urgent enough.

We can thank Etsy for raising their fees and giving me that extra boost of annoyance that made me finally decide this webshop needed to be a priority.

The timing also coincided with my participation in the 2024 Crochet Blanket Summit (this free event will be occurring Sept. 19-21) and I needed a proper landing page where I could “sell” (for free) the bonus bundle of patterns I contributed.

And, for the icing on the cake, my subscription for my newsletter provider is up for renewal in September. The host I was using (Beehiiv) doesn’t do transactional emails. But my new host (Mail Poet) can do newsletters AND the transactional emails (and costs less!?) so it’s a great time to make the switch and get everything set up and functioning!

Wrong Sides

Interlocking crochet produces an almost-opposite image on the back (the wrong side).

Overlay mosaic crochet produces a striped background with a faint illusion of the design on the front.

These differences occur because of how each stitch is made.

With interlocking crochet, every stitch gets hidden or shown depending on whether you put the next row’s stitch in front or in back. But whatever is shown on the front is hidden on the back! Vertical lines end up being horizontal dashes, so it’s not always a clear image on the wrong side.

There are a few fancy mosaic crochet techniques that involve locking the flaps down or making reversible images, but I just do the basic stitches so I’m left with stripes.

Joining Squares

With interlocking crochet, it’s relatively easy to join the squares. With overlay mosaic crochet you have to deal with the cut ends first.

Head back to this section on the Year of Dogs Landing Page to read more.

Photos

As with all the realistic animal patterns, it’s often best practice to use a really dark color for the Main Color (MC / first color used) because of how it affects the pupils and the shadows in the drawing. BUT! Sometimes it does work out to look just as interesting when the colors are switched.

Overlay Mosaic Crochet

The mosaic crochet version of each dog square uses an adjusted chart. This means I’ve removed the interlocking mesh dots and unneccessary border lines. Read more about the differences at https://ashleeslint.com/tutorials/interlocking-and-mosaic-crochet/.

Click here to learn more about the options for dealing with the cut ends at the end of each row when doing overlay mosaic crochet.

Overlay Mosaic Crochet file includes:

  • line-by-line written pattern (view key)
  • instructions for optional envelope border (view)
  • instructions on reading a chart (view)
  • a one-page chart marked with X’s (good for viewing on a screen)
  • a four-page chart marked with X’s (better for printing)
