Ashlee’s Snowflake Crochet-A-Long

I designed “Ashlee’s Snowflake 40” four years ago as part of my “2020 Holiday Squares eBook“. This large square has been through numerous updates through the years. I thought this would be a fun and quick little CAL we could all work on together while I unpack and paint walls and get settled into a new normal in our new home!

Free CAL

I like making my CALs (Crochet-A-Longs) free so that everyone has the opportunity to join in.

The free patterns on this page are the written patterns only (no charts) for the interlocking crochet version and the center-out solid overlay mosaic crochet version.

Paid Option

If you’d prefer to purchase the pattern you’ll get the written patterns and charts for both the interlocking crochet option and center-out mosaic crochet option as well as the original mosaic crochet option (worked from the bottom-up using the same chart as the interlocking crochet technique) and the adjusted, solid mosaic crochet option (also worked from the bottom-up but from a chart that’s been adjusted to remove the interlocking crochet dots).

Learn more about all these techniques at https://ashleeslint.com/tutorials/interlocking-and-mosaic-crochet/.

Follow the pattern free online here on my website, or purchase the square (with 4 crocheting options), or purchase the full eBook of Holiday Squares.

Subscribe to my newsletter to receive discount codes and be the first to know about new designs!

You’ll also have access to my Doctor Who blanket pattern!

History of “Ashlee’s Snowflake” Design

I hesitantly published my first pattern in April of 2020 and by the end of the year I was doing this almost full-time. My husband lost his job just as we had sold our house. We cancelled purchasing the new home but we went ahead with the sale because we knew Mitch could get a job anywhere across Canada and we’d have to move anyway (plus we really didn’t want to be stuck in that small town anymore – it wasn’t good for my mental health).

I drew all the designs for my “2020 Holiday Squares eBook” in the 2 bedroom basement suite we rented in an apartment in Saskatoon, SK that had a cockroach problem (we didn’t know that before we moved in, obviously). My kids watched way too much TV that winter in the big city (yay, finally!) that was shut down for COVID (oh, this sucks).

I was learning so much about designing, about publishing, and about advertising. I still have a lot to learn but in those early months I was faced with a BIG learning curve.

My husband had many interviews but COVID impacted that as well. He eventually took a temporary position at the Potash Mine and we moved into his brother’s rental house instead.

A few months after that we purchased the tiny home that we have lived in for the past 3 years and now we’ve haved moved once more into a place the kids have called “our dream home!”

Updates

In December 2020 I published 15 interlocking crochet patterns and 15 overlay mosaic crochet patterns with holiday themes. These large squares were meant to mix-and-match with my other large square designs for custom blankets or be used individually as pillows or wall hangings.

In July 2021 I added an x-marked chart for the mosaic crochet option, but still used the same dotted chart as the interlocking crochet method.

In November 2022 I updated the mosaic crochet option to use a solidified chart instead of the same chart as the interlocking crochet method.

At the same time I used that new solid mosaic crochet chart to create a center-out overlay mosaic crochet version of “Ashlee’s Snowflake 40“.

The center-out overlay mosaic crochet method is my favorite because you don’t have to cut the yarn or worry about an envelope border. Because of this, I’ve decided to offer only ONE mosaic crochet option in this free CAL – the center-out option.

Interlocking Crochet: Ashlee’s Snowflake 40

This large square was published in my “2020 Holiday Squares eBook” but could also be mixed-and-matched with other squares of the same size to create a customized blanket.

KEY

AC = accent color: the snowflake

ACB = put AC yarn to the side facing away from you

ACF = bring the AC yarn to the side facing you

B = double crochet (dc) behind, and chain 1

Back = the side not facing you

ch = chain

dc = double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up loop, *yarn over, pull through two loops* twice

EB = end stitch in back: using AC, dc into the last AC window, working behind MC

EF = end stitch in front: using AC, dc into the last AC window, working in front of MC

ES = end stitch: dc into the last window space

F = double crochet (dc) in front, and chain 1

Front = the side currently facing you

MC = main color: the background

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design

sk = skip a stitch

sc = single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through both loops

tr = treble crochet: yarn over twice, insert hook, yarn over, pull up loop, *yarn over, pull through two loops* three times

WS = wrong side: the back of your project

Remember, each color is worked into itself only and there is a chain space between each double crochet

Don’t confuse RS / WS with Front / Back

Foundation Rows

STEP 1

Using MC create 40 windows:

A. I prefer the chainless technique (chain 5, dc into first stitch, chain 1, tr into same space, *chain 1, tr into 2nd part of the previous tr* repeat as many times as needed).

B. Alternatively, you can chain 83, then DC in 5th chain from your hook. *Ch 1, Sk 1, DC* repeat until the end. Place stitch marker so your work doesn’t unravel.

STEP 2

With your AC, chain 81. Place MC windows on top of this chain (make sure the end with the stitch marker is at your left) then pull the tail of your AC through the window on the right end (see picture above). DC through the back of the next window into the 5th chain from your hook.

Short sample showing how to put the gold AC tail through the dark purple MC trellis

STEP 3

Using your AC, *Ch 1, Sk 1, DC through the back* repeat to end. Place stitch marker so your work doesn’t unravel. Both stitch markers should be on the same end.

Turn your work and continue at row 4.

Ashlee's Snowflakes

This picture shows the wrong side of each of my snowflake squares from the “2020 Holiday Squares eBook. The finished square at the top is the one we are making with this Snowflake CAL.

I used brown for the MC and it is the background color on the right side of the square but you can mostly see the AC when we are looking at the back.

Revised SC border

Chain 1, put 1 sc in the MC gap, and then the second sc should pick up one loop of the AC as well as going through the MC gap. Do this in each gap on all four sides. Add an extra chain 2 on the corners.

Other SC Border Option

Chain 1, put 2 sc in each gap on all four sides. Add an extra chain 2 space in each corner (corner gap will have 2sc, 2ch, 2sc).

Overlay Mosaic Crochet: Ashlee’s Snowflake 40

This free mosaic crochet-a-long version of “Ashlee’s Snowflake 40” is done from the center-out.

The “40” at the end of the title refers to how many windows are in the foundation row of the interlocking crochet version – which is not very useful when you’re using the mosaic crochet option! But it does give you a size reference. All patterns with “40” at the end will have the same chart size which makes it easier to mix-and-match for a custom blanket.

The paid pattern includes charts as well as two other mosaic crochet options: the original mosaic crochet pattern using the same chart as the interlocking crochet method and the adjusted, solidified overlay mosaic version worked from the bottom-up (like normal).

Yarn weight and hook size can easily be adjusted, just keep in mind your finished project will use a different amount of yarn and be a different finished size.

Center-Out Tutorial

If you’ve never done a mosaic crochet project from the center-out you may wish to start with my tutorial or by following one of my videos instead.

I don’t have a video for THIS specific pattern but hopefully you can see how to do each of the steps so you can apply it to this pattern.

KEY for Mosaic Crochet

MC = Main Color: background

CC = Contrasting Color: snowflake

ch = chain: pull a loop through

SC = single crochet: insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook

DC = double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, *yarn over, pull through two loops* twice

MR = magic ring: place yarn across the front of your fingers with the tail hanging down, wrap yarn over and behind your fingers, cross yarn at the top of your hand towards your wrist, insert hook under first loop on the back of your hand and grab the second loop, pull the loop up and chain to keep it in place.

Magic Ring

Photo tutorial and video tutorial for the Magic Ring can be viewed at https://ashleeslint.com/magicring/

SPECIAL STITCHES

(TAKE NOTE OF THE LOWER CASE VERSUS UPPER CASE WAY OF USING THESE):

sc = SC into Back Loop only

dc = dropped double crochet: DC into Front Loop of stitch in the round below, skip the sc stitch that gets hidden behind this dropped stitch

scC = single crochet corner: SC into Back Loop Only of previous round’s corner chain, chain 1, SC into the same Back Loop again

dcC = double crochet corner: do a dropped DC into front loop of previous round’s corner chain, chain 1, do another dropped DC into same front loop again. The next stitch, if it is a dc, will use this same front loop as well.

Mosaic Crochet Technique

    • The front of your work is always facing you (this is the right side, the side showing the design)
    • Yarn colors can be anything you like
      • They need to contrast well (try a black and white photo to see if they are too similar)
      • They need to be the same weight (size/thickness)
    • Foundation round counts as round 0 – it is a magic ring with 8 single crochets in it; uses the CC for this pattern!
    • Do not cut your yarn at the end of each round, carry it up through the corner stitch
    • Even-numbered rounds use MC; odd-numbered rounds use CC

Time to Crochet!

Foundation Round (Round 0)

Use Contrasting Color (CC) (snowflake color, white suggested)

Crochet 8 single crochets in a magic ring, use an invisible join to close the circle.

Alternatively, chain 2, then do 8 single crochets into the 2nd chain from your hook, use an invisible join to close the circle.

Except for round 0 (CC), even- rounds use MC and odd-numbered rounds use CC.

Repeat between the asterisks (*) for each side.

CC 1 – *scC, sc1*

MC 2 – *scC, sc3*

CC 3 – *scC, sc5*

MC 4 – *scC, sc7*

CC 5 – *scC, sc3, dc1, sc1, dc1, sc3*

MC 6 – *scC, sc3, (dc1, sc1) x2, dc1, sc3*

CC 7 – *scC, sc5, dc1, sc1, dc1, sc5*

MC 8 – *scC, sc7, dc1, sc7*

CC 9 – *scC, sc7, dc1, sc1, dc1, sc7*

MC 10 – *scC, sc3, dc5, sc1, dc1, sc1, dc5, sc3*

CC 11 – *scC, sc9, dc1, sc1, dc1, sc9*

MC 12 – *scC, sc3, dc7, sc1, dc1, sc1, dc7, sc3*

CC 13 – *scC, sc11, dc1, sc1, dc1, sc11*
