2025 Dimensions Exhibition

Dimensions is a craft exhibition hosted by the Saskatchewan Craft Council (SCC). They’ve been hosting Dimensions every 2-4 years for quite awhile and it was really interesting to look back at the past programs!

From their website:

“The SCC is commemorating its 50th anniversary in 2025. For five decades we have continued our commitment to fostering excellence in fine craft, supporting artistic growth, and connecting Saskatchewan’s artisans with broader audiences.”

Blind Jury Process

The two jurors evaluated the submitted pieces without knowing who created them. This blind jury process is where I almost failed before it all began! I had been sharing my excitement to enter this competition by posting progress photos on social media – I stopped as soon as I realized the problem and then had to just hope it was enough.

When I learned about Dimensions I was also learning about the other jurying process that is offered at the SCC and clearly I mixed them up in my mind.

Categories

To participate in Dimensions, craftspeople and artists must live in Saskatchewan, Canada. Artisans may enter one or two pieces that fit into the following categories:

  • basketry
  • calligraphy
  • clay
  • fibre
  • glass
  • metal
  • paper
  • photography
  • printmaking
  • wood
  • jewellry
  • sculpture
  • seed beading
  • or any combination of craft media (mixed media)

All work must be original in concept, design, and execution. All work must have been completed between January 1, 2022 and March 24, 2025 and not been previously exhibited at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery.

My Entries

As a member of the SCC I was allowed to submit two pieces. I chose Purpureus Grandiflorus and Book Dragon.

I wanted to crochet Book Dragon in a beautiful gradient with expensive yarn but that meant I didn’t have time to crochet a second piece. So I was limited to projects that had already been completed in the required timeframe.

I was going to use the interlocking crochet technique for Book Dragon so I dug through my boxes to find something that showed off the mosaic crochet technique and only later realized I had picked a similar color palette for both projects!

Dimensions 2025 Entries

This was the last update I sent in my newsletter – I knew I couldn’t leave everyone completely in the dark after all the progress reports but I suddenly realized it was supposed to be a secret.

Timeline

  • February 5, 2025:
    • I get an email asking if I’d be willing to be a juror for the SCC (one of the services the SCC offers is an evaluation for artisans to prove their quality). I was so honored that they found me by looking for crochet experts in Saskatchewan!
    • This reminds me that I’d been wanting to look into becoming a member of the SCC myself; so I finally get to check that off my to-do list and I am now an official member as a Professional Craftsperson.
    • One of the benefits of membership is free entry into their craft exhibition called Dimensions – so I start to look into what that entails.
  • February 8, 2025:
    • I make the most expensive yarn purchase I’ve ever made! Book Dragon is a relatively large blanket and I’m using Malabrigo Rios yarn which is a worsted weight 100% Merino Wool.
    • I have 6 weeks to get this crocheted, get pretty pictures, and submit my entry.
  • March 1, 2025:
    • I have jury duty 😉 and meet a few awesome craftspeople.
  • March 24, 2025:
    • Deadline to enter Dimensions via an online process using photos.

  • April 7, 2025:
    • I receive notification that from the 222 submitted works, my piece Book Dragon has been selected for the shortlist!
    • I receive special packaging instructions and a deadline for getting my piece to the gallery.
  • May 2, 2025:
    • Shortlisted pieces Open House
    • My first time being displayed in an art gallery (soooooo many feelings!)
    • No artist names listed on the items because it’s a blind jurying process
  • May 10, 2025:
    • 2025 Dimensions Awards Show
    • Thankfully, it was livestreamed because I came down with a sudden illness and coudn’t attend in person
    • Learned my piece had been selected as one of the 35 pieces for 2025 Dimensions Exhibition!
    • Was stunned to find out I had also won the Award for Excellence in Textiles!
Dimensions 2025

I watched the livestream on YouTube because I was too sick to attend in person. The auto-captions never spell my name right lol

Award for Excellence in Textiles

I was stunned to be part of the shortlisted pieces, absolutely shocked to be part of the final Dimensions set, and then nearly burst into tears when they announced I had won an award for excellence as well!

They had 14 monetary prizes to award for 2025 Dimensions.

The Award for Excellence in Textiles was a $500 award sponsored by Saskatoon Weavers & Spinners

I am so honored that Book Dragon was chosen and so thankful to the sponsors!
