I sure hope that I’m not allowing one of these amazing patterns to get brushed under the rug by releasing them at the same time. The blanket is amazing, and the flower motif is so versatile and cute. I really love them both individually.

But, I created them at the same time. So, to me, they are a set. You can get them together in an eBook called, “Missi” or you can purchase them individually (“Missi the Horse” and “Missi’s Flowers”). Jump to the purchase links. (or, on a desktop, just look to your right).

You’ll notice there’s a difference in chart size between the two crochet techniques. That’s because the chart has been adjusted for best use with each technique.

This beautiful horse, with a long, long mane, is named “Missi”. I don’t actually have a horse, but as a kid I often fantasized about the freedom of riding away on a horse. I imagine a field of flowers with the sun shining on the dew and I think of peace and tranquillity. I used to include fairies in the daydream too.

I wanted the border to give the impression of a field, rather than drawing an actual field in the background behind the horse. I always hope to see dainty wildflowers out my window when we travel, but around here it’s usually just wheat or flax.

The little flower is very minimalist. I wanted it to be dainty and not detract from the horse. I tried creating a pattern of flowers behind Missi for the blanket (alternating, spaced closer or farther apart, bunched here or there, etc) but after many attempts I decided the flowers were usually too much next to the feature (the horse).

So, my final decision was to use a handful of flowers only. However, after playing with this design so long I really loved the way the flowers looked on their own and knew that it could work on its own as well!

I know some of you really love having a matching pillow to go with the blanket. “Missi’s Flowers” comes with a written pattern and chart for a square (I have quite a few squares of this size: see more at AshleesLint.com/patterns#large). But, because it is a repeatable design I also created a full written pattern and chart that you can use to create a project of any size!

Each option has interlocking crochet and overlay mosaic crochet versions. So that is 2 files for “Missi the Horse” and 4 files for “Missi’s Flowers”. All 6 files are included in the eBook, “Missi”, but they are downloaded as an eBook.

When I was checking my math to make sure my repeatable design worked with interlocking I made a sample 2 repeats wide by 2 repeats tall. I used a 4 mm hook and dk weight yarn (3 – light worsted) even though the pattern technically says to use a 4 weight yarn.

The image shows up the same whether you use extra jumbo yarn or lace weight yarn. As long as your hook size matches your yarn size it will work out! Of course, the smaller yarn will result in a smaller finished piece too. This one just so happens to be the perfect size for a placemat!

It is slightly easier to create a repeating design using the mosaic technique so a single repeat was sufficient.

I thought about leaving it as only a repeatable pattern. Technically, you can use it to make any size of project. But I have a LOT of large squares with the same chart size and it makes sense to me to have this pattern written properly for that size.

When I was posting teaser photos a lot of people guessed holiday-related things. I guess the end of October isn’t too far away from Christmas. It made me giggle a little. And then Linda sent me her photo of the test square and she said it looked like Christmas ribbon to her so she staged it with some lights.

I think it’s fun to see so many purposes in a single design, what do you think?

I also like to play with color. I switched my Main Color (MC) and Accent Color (AC) for my samples of the square and the repeatable version. The MC is the first color used, so it creates the outside border line, and it is also the flowers in this particular design.

Completed 40-window square with in-progress repeatable design. The Main Color is the yarn used first, it is the flowers in this design.

To be clear, “Missi’s Flowers” has a full written pattern and chart for a small repeatable section (chart size AND as a large square (chart size of 81 x 81 for interlocking, and 77 x 77 for mosaic).
