Summer Direction CAL: Sections 11 and 12

Today is my birthday! My kids got me three giant balls of soft jumbo blanket yarn. It was not a surprise, hahaha, because dad didn’t hide it well! I have a ball of neon green, and two balls of neon pink. Now, what to make with it?

Of course, since I am a mom, I made the cake myself (Remi helped me with the sprinkles), I didn’t get photos of any of the festivities, and I am left with the clean up. 🙃

I remember in high school some kids would take the day off when it was their birthday. Their birthday was the most important event of the year for them. No way were they working their part time job after school on that day. “Me-time” to the max!

For me it has usually just been another day. I feel uncomfortable when everyone stares at me and expects me to blow out the candles. I get nervous that I won’t have the appropriate surprise-and-thank-you reaction. I like the kids’ birthdays better. That’s fun for me.

This year I tried to enjoy the moments but I need to sneak in a little bit of “work” now. My crochet stuff is sort of work, sort of hobby, sort of my favorite thing but also has random deadlines and can sometimes be stressful. So, it is “work” now.

The next two sections in my Summer Direction CAL don’t require much from me (I did all the real work earlier) so I am posting this even though it is my birthday and then I will go crochet some more! We need to replicate the opposite of the chevrons that were at the beginning of the project, so we are doing Chevron B twice. If you’re doing overlay mosaic crochet then you simply repeat the section. If you are using the interlocking crochet technique (what I call Locked Filet Mesh / LFM) then you need to first do Chevron B starting with the Wrong Side (WS) and then do Chevron B starting with the Right Side (RS).

After this we only have the final border lines and the finishing touch: an envelope border on the mosaic piece or a simple single crochet border on the interlocking. That section will be published in only a couple days – I am determined to finish this Summer Direction Crochet-A-Long before Summer ends (the fall equinox is on September 21 I think).

If you’d rather not wait for all the free releases (or you’re desperate for the charts), you can grab a FULL copy of the pattern and charts on Etsy or Ravelry. Get 50% off your purchase of “Summer Direction CAL” on Etsy and Ravelry until September 30, 2021 by using code “SUMMER2021”!

In case you were skimming through all of that, scroll back up and do Chevron B for mosaic for section 11 and 12. And do Chevron B (WS) for section 11 of the LFM and Chevron B (RS) for section 12!

By the way, I have been enjoying all the birthday love in my Facebook group, thanks everyone!

March Gnome

Gnomes are totally in right now! I was overwhelmed with the responses to my ebook, “A Year of Gnomes”.

You can grab the ebook on Etsy or Ravelry; you also have the option of buying the individual monthly gnomes. March Gnome is the newest addition.

March Gnome: Interlocking and mosaic crochet patterns

March Gnome is another oversized afghan square (20″ or 40-window foundation when using the interlocking crochet technique). I have quite a few squares of this size that you can mix-and-match to create your own blanket!

I have already emailed this pattern to everyone who purchased the ebook on Etsy. And if you bought it on Ravelry you will see an “update available”.

I have always liked the celebrations on March 17 (in school we would celebrate St. Patrick’s day).

  • It is exactly 6 months away from my birthday.
  • Everything is green (and usually emerald green, which is my favorite).
  • Plus, you get to color pictures of magical rainbows and pots of gold.
  • Oh, and McDonald’s comes out with a shamrock shake ☘ which is minty delicious!
  • Sometimes the weather gives you a reprieve from winter with a spring-like sneak peak lol
  • And, as an adult, I also get to celebrate my son’s birthday!

This will be his 4th birthday so I am going to put all my patterns on sale in honor of him! Get 40% off anything in my Etsy shop or Ravelry store until March 4th!

Happy birthday, Remington! 🥰

By the way, our Master List of Gnomes is here:

September Summary

August was pretty busy, September didn’t slow down.

September 1st started my 3rd CAL (Crochet-A-Long)! The Abstract Queen is a beautiful, big queen-size blanket that uses motifs from my small abstract squares. This was my first CAL to be offered in both techniques: LFM and Mosaic.

You can find the Abstract Queen on Ravelry and Etsy and also for free, here on the blog.

Don’t forget to create your project on ravelry (with at least one picture) to enter the weekly draw!

Quite a few people have asked about making the Abstract Queen smaller – and there’s no easy way to do that. Many mosaic patterns out there are just repeats of 8 or 12 or some small number like that but this was drawn up more like a single image (like the Speedy Train). You can cut the end off if you want, but it wasn’t designed for that.

I did draw up a smaller blanket using the same abstract themes and I call it the Abstract Princess. You can get that pattern on Ravelry and Etsy.

My 33rd birthday meant a sale for you: for a few days everything was 33% off and a lot of you grabbed some new patterns! I can’t wait to see all your new projects!

Speaking of new projects… I really meant to just focus on getting the mosaic instructions for the patterns I already have. I really didn’t plan on creating new patterns. But, then my husband lost his job and I wanted the instant gratification that comes from a new pattern (or two). 🤣

All of my new patterns come with interlocking and mosaic instructions. And I publish them to Ravelry and Etsy. These are the new ones this month:

I did also manage to update these patterns to include the mosaic instructions (the interlocking patterns are still there, don’t worry!). This is the Ravelry list and these were added to my MOSAIC BUNDLE:

Then I updated these patterns on Etsy and I learned that there is no easy way to get updated patterns to my customers on Etsy! 😱 So, that really disappoints me and I don’t know what to do to fix that.

If you have purchased on Etsy and you want an update please send me a message asking for the pattern, including your email address!

October is sure to be just as busy! We have moved into a small apartment temporarily while my husband looks for a job. Depending on where he gets a job, we may be doing another big move right away here. I am sure the second move will go smoother because of all the packing and unpacking practice we have now lol. Thanks for sticking with me through this big transition!

August Summary

I like the monthly summary because it is hard for me to remember what happened 30 days ago. Lol

Besides being very busy in the household (3 birthdays, our anniversary, listed our house for sale, conditonally sold it and bought another in 5 days) I have also been quite busy with my computer work for these crochet patterns.

The Birthday Cupcake pattern was on sale all month. The Preemie Love Blanket was on sale all month. Then it was free for 3 days as part of a promotion with Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

I published 6 new patterns on Ravelry (with LFM and Mosaic instructions of course):

I published these ones on Etsy (LFM and Mosaic):

I published these ones on this blog (free!) (some were previously published on Ravelry, at least 5 were never seen anywhere before) and they can also be found in my Facebook group files:

I also created a Buzz Lightyear sweater for my son. I wrote about it on the blog, you can decide if it counts as a pattern.

And I crocheted the Heart Levels Banner and some Lightning Squiggle pieces to make my purple Preemie Love blanket larger for a friend to use as a lapghan.

I added these videos to my YouTube channel:

I updated these “old” patterns to include mosaic instructions:

Wow, I feel exhausted just looking at that list. September might be slower?I will only have the start of the Abstract Queen CAL, more patterns to update with mosaic instructions, my birthday, and moving (we should be taking possession mid September if all the ducks fall into line).

Thank you for coming on this journey with me!

Household Birthdays

Three of the five people living in my house have birthdays in August!

First, my husband. He buys his own gift and I make him a meal (kind of like every day lol). I also make him a cake each year and decorate it fancy (but very homemade “fancy”… not professional looking).

Then, a few days later, my baby will turn 1! I’ll bake her some cupcakes or a small cake to smash.

Exactly a week later is my eldest daughter’s birthday: she will be 6 this year!

So, to celebrate, I’ve managed to add mosaic instructions to my “Birthday Cupcake” pattern and it will be on sale for $1 for the rest of the month!

Or, if you prefer, you can grab it on Etsy! Their discounts don’t work the same way so I’ve just changed the “regular” price temporarily.
