Doctor Who: Are You My Mummy?

I thought I was done with this series, but I think I won’t ever truly be done lol There’s always more I could add! You will have to pick and choose your favorites.

The chart can be used for both interlocking and mosaic crochet (and probably other crafts too). The written instructions for both are below, click on the word in the previous sentence to be taken to that part of this blog entry.

The Locked Filet Mesh (LFM) interlocking crochet method uses only chain spaces and double crochets to create a mesh; two colors are worked alternately which creates the pattern.

Mosaic crochet is single crochet and double crochet stitches. The double crochet stitches cover some of the other color’s single crochet stitches to create the design. My patterns instruct you to cut your yarn at the end of each row.

See my other posts for tutorials on both techniques.

Interlocking Crochet Pattern (Locked Filet Mesh / LFM)

Important Details

  • US crochet terminology
  • Chart is 81 x 81 = 6,561 stitches
  • Finished size approximately 20” x 20”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (480 yards total)
    • Main color (MC) – 230 yards plus 20 for optional border (grey on chart)
    • Accent color (AC) – 230 yards (black on chart)
  • Gauge: 4 DC x 2 rows = 1”

Key

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design
WS = wrong side: the back of your project
Front = the side currently facing you
Back = the side not facing you
Ch = chain
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
F = DC in front, then CH 1
B = DC behind, then CH 1
ES = DC into the last window space
EF = end stitch in front: using AC, DC into the last AC window, working in front of MC
EB = end stitch in back: using AC, DC into the last AC window, working behind MC
ACF = bring the AC yarn to the side facing you
ACB = put AC yarn to the side facing away from you

Notes:

  • If you chain tighter than me you may need to Ch 4 where I Ch 3
  • Don’t confuse RS / WS with Front / Back
  • Remember, each color is worked into itself only and there is a chain space between each DC

Foundation Rows (41 MC stitches / 40 AC stitches)

  1. Using MC create 40 windows. I prefer the chainless technique using triple/treble crochet but alternatively you can Ch 81 + 3 (or 4 if you chain tighter than me), then DC in 6th (or 7th) Ch from your hook. *Ch 1, Sk 1, DC* repeat until the end. Place stitch marker so your work doesn’t unravel.
  2. With your AC, Ch 81 +1 (or 2 if you chain tighter). Place MC windows on top of this chain (make sure the end with the stitch marker is at your left) and pull the tail of your AC through the window on the right end (see picture by the Key). DC through the back of the next window into the 6th (or 7th) Ch from your hook.
  3. *Ch 1, Sk 1, DC through back* repeat to end. Place stitch marker so your work doesn’t unravel. Both stitch markers should be on the same end.

Mosaic Crochet

Important Details

  • US crochet terminology
  • Chart is 81 x 81 = 6,561 stitches
  • Finished size approximately 20” x 20”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (550 yards)
    • Main color – 275 yards
    • Contrasting color – 275 yards
  • Gauge: 16 stitches x 16 rows = 4”

Key

MC = Main Color: black in chart
CC = Contrasting Color: white in chart
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
CH = chain
SC = single crochet: insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops
sc = SC into Back Loop only
DC = double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through two loops
dc = DC into Front Loop of stitch, 2 rows below
JS = Joining Stitch / Standing SC: create slip knot, insert hook under both loops, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops
ES = End Stitch: SC under both loops, CH 1, cut yarn and pull through tightly

Notes:

  • Remember to skip the same number of stitch(es) behind your dc(s) before doing your next sc
  • The front of your work is always facing you (this is the right side, the side showing the design)
  • You are always working from the right to the left
  • You tie on a new yarn at the beginning of each row and cut it at the end
    • Tails don’t need to be longer than an inch and a half
  • Yarn colors can be anything you like
    • They need to contrast well (try a black and white photo to see if they are too similar)
    • They need to be the same weight (size/thickness)
    • My charts use black as the Main Color and white as the Coordinating Color
  • I prefer using a chainless SC to create my foundation row because then I have tails on both sides of my work just like all the other rows will have
  • Even-numbered rows use MC; odd-numbered rows use CC

Foundation Row: use Main Color (MC)

Use a chainless SC technique to create 81 +2 SC. Or, chain 81 +3, SC in 2nd from hook and all the way back across. Cut and tie off.

Switch to Contrasting Color (CC) {Even- rows use MC; odd-numbered rows use CC}

Doctor Who: Tardis Banner

This is called “Tardis Banner” to differentiate between the small square called “Tardis 20”. The first and last squares I’m making in my Doctor Who series both show the Tardis: the iconic image that makes us feel geeky and excited!

  • Chart is 81 x 121 = 9,801 stitches
  • Finished size approximately 20” x 30”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (720 yards total)
    • Main color (MC) – 350 yards plus 20 for optional border
    • Accent color (AC) – 350 yards
  • Gauge: 4 DC x 2 rows = 1”

Key

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design
WS = wrong side: the back of your project
Front = the side currently facing you
Back = the side not facing you
Ch = chain
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
F = DC in front, then CH 1
B = DC behind, then CH 1

  • Chart is 81 x 121 = 9,801 stitches
  • Finished size approximately 20” x 30”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (790 yards)
    • Main color – 395 yards
    • Contrasting color – 395 yards
  • Gauge: 16 stitches x 16 rows = 4”

Key

MC = Main Color: black in chart
CC = Contrasting Color: white in chart
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
sc = SC into Back Loop only
DC = double crochet
dc = DC into Front Loop of stitch, 2 rows below
JS = Joining Stitch: insert hook under both loops, pull up a loop, slip stitch, SC in same space

Foundation Row: use Main Color (MC) (black on the chart)

Use a chainless SC technique to create 81 +2 SC. Or, chain 81 +3, SC in 2nd from hook and all the way back across. Cut and tie off.

Switch to Contrasting Color (CC) {Even- rows use MC; odd-numbered rows use CC}

Doctor Who: Sonic Screwdriver

I’m not enough of a fan to know which doctor this screwdriver belongs to. It might not belong to any, I suppose. It is my version of something that looks high tech and gadgety. It probably still won’t work on wood, though. It is a very narrow and tall addition to the Doctor Who series.

  • Chart is 41 x 121 = 4,961 stitches
  • Finished measurements, about 10” x 30”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (365 yards total)
    • Main color (MC) – 175 yards plus 15 for optional border
    • Accent color (AC) – 175 yards
  • Gauge: 4 DC x 2 rows = 1”

Key

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design
WS = wrong side: the back of your project
Front = the side currently facing you
Back = the side not facing you
Ch = chain
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
F = DC in front, then CH 1
B = DC behind, then CH 1

Foundation Rows (21 MC stitches / 20 AC stitches)

  1. Using MC create 20 windows. I prefer the chainless technique using triple/treble crochet but alternatively you can Ch 41 + 3 (or 4 if you chain tighter than me), then DC in 6th (or 7th) Ch from your hook. *Ch 1, Sk 1, DC* repeat until the end. Place stitch marker so your work doesn’t unravel.
  2. With your AC, Ch 41 +1 (or 2 if you chain tighter).

  • Chart is 41 x 121 = 4,961 stitches
  • Finished measurements, about 10” x 30”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (400 yards)
    • Main color – 200 yards
    • Contrasting color – 200 yards
  • Gauge: 16 stitches x 16 rows = 4”

Key

MC = Main Color: black in chart
CC = Contrasting Color: white in chart
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
CH = chain

Foundation Row: use Main Color (MC) (black on the chart)

Use a chainless SC technique to create 41 +2 SC. Or, chain 81 +3, SC in 2nd from hook and all the way back across. Cut and tie off.

Switch to Contrasting Color (CC) {Even- rows use MC; odd-numbered rows use CC}

Doctor Who: Random Bowtie

This barely fits in the Dr Who category and it is a very strange size. But bowties say Doctor Who to me, so I’ve tagged it as part of that series.

Why did I make such a random piece? Someone requested a full bowtie from my Father’s Day CAL – the bowtie scarf uses this motif but it is cropped. They are using the chart to insert a bowtie into a garment they are making! I can’t wait to see it.

You can buy a printable PDF if you like. It also includes a nicer chart to work from.

Random Bowtie in Interlocking and Mosaic Crochet

You will receive an ad-free, printable PDF of this pattern and chart in interlocking crochet and also in mosaic.

CA$1.00

  • Pattern is in US crochet terminology
  • Finished Size: 24” x 13”
  • Chart size 97 x 53 = 5,141 stitches
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (375 yards total)
    • Main color (MC) – 180 yards plus 15 for optional border
    • Accent color (AC) – 180 yards
  • Gauge: 4 DC x 2 rows = 1”

Key

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design
WS = wrong side: the back of your project
Front = the side currently facing you
Back = the side not facing you
Ch = chain
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
F = DC in front, then CH 1
B = DC behind, then CH 1

Foundation Rows (49 MC stitches / 48 AC stitches)

  1. Using MC create 48 windows. I prefer the chainless technique using triple/treble crochet but alternatively you can Ch 97 + 3 (or 4 if you chain tighter than me), then DC in 6th (or 7th) Ch from your hook. *Ch 1, Sk 1, DC* repeat until the end. Place stitch marker so your work doesn’t unravel.
  2. With your AC, Ch 97 +1 (or 2 if you chain tighter).

Doctor Who: Silence Marks

This little square did not require a lot of talent to draw lol but I think it is a nice addition to the Dr Who set.

  • Chart is 41 x 41 = 1,681 stitches
  • Finished size approximately 10” x 10”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (130 yards total)
    • Main color (MC) – 60 yards plus 10 for optional border
    • Accent color (AC) – 60 yards
  • Gauge: 4 DC x 2 rows = 1”

Key

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design
WS = wrong side: the back of your project
Front = the side currently facing you
Back = the side not facing you
Ch = chain
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
F = DC in front, then CH 1
B = DC behind, then CH 1

Doctor Who: Moisturize Me

When I published this to Ravelry, I got a few comments right away.

“This is too funny! Hahahahaha Thank you for making this” -Hey4Horses

“Ha! love it thank you for the smile:))” -psyphr

These comments really made my day! This little square IS amusing! And a little creepy haha. My husband does the creeped out shiver everytime he sees it.

Key

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design
WS = wrong side: the back of your project
Front = the side currently facing you
Back = the side not facing you
Ch = chain
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
F = DC in front, then CH 1
B = DC behind, then CH 1

Place MC windows on top of this chain (make sure the end with the stitch marker is at your left) and pull the tail of your AC through the window on the right end (see picture by the Key). DC through the back of the next window into the 6th (or 7th) Ch from your hook.
  3. *Ch 1, Sk 1, DC through back* repeat to end. Place stitch marker so your work doesn’t unravel. Both stitch markers should be on the same end.

Mosaic Crochet

Important Details

  • US crochet terminology
  • Chart is 81 x 81 = 6,561 stitches
  • Finished size approximately 20” x 20”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (550 yards)
    • Main color – 275 yards
    • Contrasting color – 275 yards
  • Gauge: 16 stitches x 16 rows = 4”

Key

MC = Main Color: black in chart
CC = Contrasting Color: white in chart
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
sc = SC into Back Loop only
DC = double crochet
dc = DC into Front Loop of stitch, 2 rows below
JS = Joining Stitch: insert hook under both loops, pull up a loop, slip stitch, SC in same space

Foundation Row: use Main Color (MC) (black on the chart)

Use a chainless SC technique to create 81 +2 SC. Or, chain 81 +3, SC in 2nd from hook and all the way back across. Cut and tie off.

Doctor Who: Weeping Angel

My husband said I should have drawn this scarier. But I find these baddies scary enough!! Take note, the image I share uses a lighter grey as the Main Color and black as the Accent Color or Coordinating Color.

Mosaic Crochet

Important Details

  • US crochet terminology
  • Chart is 81 x 81 = 6,561 stitches
  • Finished size approximately 20” x 20”
  • 4.5 mm hook (US7)
  • Worsted weight yarn (550 yards)
    • Main color – 275 yards
    • Contrasting color – 275 yards
  • Gauge: 16 stitches x 16 rows = 4”

Key

MC = Main Color: black in chart
CC = Contrasting Color: white in chart
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
CH = chain

Foundation Row: use Main Color (MC) (grey on the chart)

Use a chainless SC technique to create 81 +2 SC. Or, chain 81 +3, SC in 2nd from hook and all the way back across. Cut and tie off.

Switch to Contrasting Color (CC) {Even- rows use MC; odd-numbered rows use CC}

Doctor Who: K9

The angles on a robot dog are hard to draw! This companion to the doctor isn’t in a lot of the new episodes so I am not overly familiar with him, but classic Doctor Who fans will be happy to see him!

The chart can be used for both interlocking and mosaic crochet (and probably other crafts too). The written instructions for both are below, click on the word in the previous sentence to be taken to that part of this blog entry.

Errata update Feb 16, 2021: in the mosaic version, rows 11 and 45 had “dc3” which is not correct, both instances should say “dc1, sc1, dc1” and have been corrected below.

Key

RS = right side: the side of your work that will show the finished design
WS = wrong side: the back of your project
Front = the side currently facing you
Back = the side not facing you
Ch = chain
Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
F = DC in front, then CH 1
B = DC behind, then CH 1

Sp = space
Sk = skip a stitch
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
sc = SC into Back Loop only
DC = double crochet
dc = DC into Front Loop of stitch, 2 rows below
JS = Joining Stitch: insert hook under both loops, pull up a loop, slip stitch, SC in same space

Foundation Row: use Main Color (MC) (black on the chart)

Use a chainless SC technique to create 81 +2 SC. Or, chain 81 +3, SC in 2nd from hook and all the way back across. Cut and tie off.

Switch to Contrasting Color (CC) {Even- rows use MC; odd-numbered rows use CC}

A series of Doctor Who Patterns

February 2021 Update: I have created a pretty “webpage” to list these patterns instead of just this “blog entry”.

I am a sci-fi fan. I have always been an avid reader; my favorite author is Orson Scott Card. I have all the books in the Ender and Bean series in paperback, and almost all of them on audiobook as well.

A few years ago Netflix (in Canada) had ALL of the Doctor Who episodes! My husband and I started watching them even though he isn’t as much of a science fiction fan as I am. And we were both enjoying them (I think) until Netflix removed them.

I don’t normally buy tv or movies on the Google play store but when I was pregnant with my first child I was often sick and I got pretty bored lying around. So, to distract myself I bought a few episodes of Doctor Who.

In the years since, I have continued to buy a season here and there. And I have had 3 children now and it seems to be a pregnancy addiction for me. Must. Watch. While. Pregnant.

And I became such a fan that I convinced my musical husband that we should name our third child after River Song! 😍

Melody is almost a year old now and I’m glad I’ve gotten the opportunity to create and share some Dctor Who fan art!

I’ll be putting my fan art here on the blog – but I’ll try to space it out so you’re not inundated with email updates.

I have a playlist on YouTube of 4 videos where you can watch me crochet Tardis 20 (and hopefully crochet along with me)! I use the interlocking crochet technique for this one.

You can search my blog by post tag or category, but I thought it might be nice to have the full list here for easy access as well! (some of these are in the queue to be posted – the links will work soon). They are all available in interlocking and mosaic form on the blog and in the files of my Facebook group, but only a couple are available on Ravelry.

I also want to include two flowers in my blanket – one to represent Rose and one to remind me of Amy Pond. I created these squares for the Mother’s Day CAL and they are available on Ravelry individually.

I also created a new Rose in Bloom square because I just love Rose and I enjoy drawing flowers.

I think the series is complete for now. I may revisit it later – you never know! This is the mockup I think I may use when I actually get around to crocheting it (I made this before the “Are You My Mummy” square so it isn’t included here).
